I would run nonstop from fence line to fence line just for fun in my yard. I found out I could actually run when, in the 4th grade, I joined an after school cross country club and won the final race by beating everyone, including the boys. In 7th grade, I ran cross country then switched to track and basketball my 8th grade year where I broke 3 school records in the high jump (5’0), triple jump (30’9), and the 100 meter hurdles (17.84). I also fell in love with basketball. Since I was new to basketball. I spent hours every day for almost a year doing ball handling, shooting, and footwork drills. People were shocked with how I could handle the ball as well as a 5’4 point guard. One of my individual goals was to show people that with determination, tall girls can be fast, agile, and coordinated. In 9th grade, I decided to commit to basketball all year round to go after a scholarship by joining an elite traveling team, The Way to Win. Immediately I had attention, especially since I could dunk a soccer ball. I played on this team for 2 years and had many college coaches from around the country watching me. But the thing was… the track coaches at my high school and my friends kept nagging me to try track again. It was my junior year in high school and I had only done track in middle school. I decided to take a gamble this year and quit my traveling basketball team to try and be great at a sport I have little experience in. In my first high school track season, I went to state in the 4x400 relay and the high jump. I ran a split time of 60 seconds for my 4x400 and I jumped 5’2, placing 7th. I currently am on the Spokane Speed Academy team and I am excited to uncover my full potential in track and field along with going to Nationals for the first time! I am planning to go to college to become an illustrator along with earning a scholarship in either track and field or basketball. |
